If you own an MX Master or a G-series anything, a rickety Logitech utility is probably camped out on more than one machine. On macOS the vendor's options app asks for a pile of system permissions, ships AI features nobody asked for, has at various points demanded a login, and still breaks in predictable ways, most recently on a missing certificate. 1 The usual fix has been to leave it uninstalled and put up with losing half the mouse's features. OpenLogi is the project that asks why. 2
OpenLogi is a native, local-first replacement for Logi Options+ written in Rust. It remaps buttons, drives DPI and SmartShift, configures keyboard lighting, and controls webcam settings, all without an account or telemetry, and it treats Linux as a first-class platform rather than an afterthought. 2
The project has been climbing GitHub's weekly trending list. It has passed 14,000 stars, with roughly 5,000 of those arriving in a single week at the time I checked. 3
What makes it different
OpenLogi doesn't drive the hardware through Logitech's own app. It talks to devices directly over HID++ and writes settings back to them, supporting Logi Bolt and Unifying receivers, Bluetooth, and a plain wired connection. 2
One plain TOML file holds the whole config, so it is portable and hand editable, the kind of thing you keep in your dotfiles and sync between machines. 2 Button presses are captured by an OS-level input hook (a CGEventTap on macOS) and mapped to actions, while DPI and SmartShift are read and written straight over HID++. 24
A daemon and a config editor
Since v0.6.0 OpenLogi is two Rust programs. 4 openlogi-agent is a headless, always-on daemon that owns HID++ device I/O, the input hook, foreground-app tracking, device pairing, and the menu-bar status item. openlogi-gui is an on-demand editor built on GPUI that talks to the agent over a tarpc IPC channel rather than doing device I/O itself. 24 Remapping keeps running after you close the window, and the tray item lives in the daemon, not the editor.
Because the agent tracks the foreground app, profiles can switch per application: a mouse can run high DPI in one app and flip scroll direction in another. That auto-switching works on macOS and Windows today, and on Linux on X11 and XWayland. 2
Feature tour
On the mouse, OpenLogi can remap the middle, mode-shift, and thumbwheel buttons and bind directional gestures with live capture on any capable button. Its Actions Ring is a cursor-centered, eight-slot radial menu with layouts that can differ per app. DPI presets and cycle or set-preset actions are carried over HID++ (0x2201), as are the SmartShift wheel mode toggle and a permanent-ratchet option (0x2111). Per-device native scroll inversion is there too (0x2121). 2
Keyboards get global F-key remapping with the same action catalog as the mouse, plus power-user actions like typed text and key combos, and static RGB lighting where the hardware supports it (0x8070 and 0x8080). 2
Camera support is the unusual part. For any Logitech UVC webcam, OpenLogi drives image controls straight to the hardware, including zoom, focus, exposure, brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness, white balance, tint, and anti-flicker, with one-click Default, Streaming, and Video-call profiles that persist per device. Anti-flicker and low-light controls landed in the latest release, v0.7.7. 25
Honest caveats
- OpenLogi is under active development and not yet stable, so features and config can still change. 2
- You have to quit Options+ first. Both apps claim exclusive HID++ access, and only one can own a given receiver at a time. 2
- Device coverage grows release by release. Recent versions have been largely a stream of newly recognized hardware, like the new Lightspeed dongle ID added in v0.7.7, so support partly depends on how many people have and test a given model. 5
The project is dual-licensed under Apache-2.0 or MIT, and its HID++ implementation is a vendored fork of the hidpp crate (0BSD). 2 It is not affiliated with Logitech; "Logitech," "MX Master," and "Options+" are trademarks of Logitech International S.A. 2
If you've been putting up with Options+ on macOS or Windows, or you run Linux and want a first-class config app for that hardware, it's worth trying. Homebrew users get it with brew install --cask openlogi; elsewhere there are .deb, .rpm, and Arch packages, plus a signed Windows installer. 2
