David Heinemeier Hansson has spent the last few years building a Linux distribution the way he builds software: opinionated, complete, and unapologetic. Omarchy, incubated at 37signals (the company behind Basecamp and HEY), is an Arch-based desktop that ships with everything a working developer needs out of the box. It is now backed by an $8 million nonprofit foundation that DHH says exists to make the "Year of Linux on the Desktop" actually happen.12
What's in the box
Omarchy is built on three core pieces of technology: Arch Linux as the base, the Hyprland tiling window manager, and Quickshell as the desktop construction kit.3 The name comes from the "omakase" idea: the chef picks, you trust the meal. DHH is explicit that this is a personal, opinionated system, not a grab bag of preinstalled packages. "Zero bloat here: Just everything I use."3
That means a full development and media stack ships by default: Neovim, Chromium, Obsidian, LibreOffice, Kdenlive, and OBS Studio, plus a retro Winamp-style music player for good measure. It's released under the MIT license.34
The current release is 4.0.0, codenamed Quattro, distributed as an ISO you flash to a USB stick.2 You can do a full-disk install or drop it into free space to dual-boot alongside Windows, and full-disk encryption is on by default, which is why the installer insists you turn off Secure Boot and TPM in the BIOS first.5 On fast modern hardware the install can finish in under a minute; DHH says it shouldn't take more than five minutes even on an older machine.5
AI agents are treated as first-class citizens
The most distinctive part of Omarchy for a technical audience is how it handles AI coding agents. Omarchy doesn't pick a favorite. Instead, every major coding-agent CLI ships as a lazy-loaded launcher, so nothing is downloaded until you first run one.6 That includes Claude Code (claude), OpenAI Codex (codex), OpenCode (opencode), Google's Antigravity CLI (agy), GitHub Copilot CLI (copilot), and several others, all wired through tiny mise-managed stubs in ~/.local/bin/.6
You pick a default agent with omarchy default agent <name> (or under the Omarchy Menu), and Super + Shift + Ctrl + A launches it in a dedicated terminal window.6 There's even crash diagnosis wired in: Omarchy watches systemd-coredump, and when a process segfaults it hands the core dump to your default agent, guided by a "diagnose-crash" skill, to decide whether the crash is worth reporting upstream.6 For local models, the manual recommends LM Studio and Ollama.6
The $8 million foundation
Omarchy's repo has grown past 29,000 GitHub stars, and the Omacom Foundation was announced on August 21, 2026.14 It's a nonprofit that will hold the trademarks, fund infrastructure, promote the work, and support the open-source projects and developers Omarchy depends on.1 Eight founding patrons each put in $1 million: Shopify's Tobi Lütke, Stripe's Patrick Collison, Dell's Michael Dell, Block's Jack Dorsey, Cloudflare's Matthew Prince, Sesame and Oculus cofounder Brendan Iribe, 37signals' Jason Fried, and DHH himself.1
The first big spend is an exclusive sponsorship of Hyprland and its creator, Vaxry, who is responsible for one of the three core technologies in Omarchy. It's a three-year deal with an option for two more, taking over from October 10, and it lets Hyprland's paid "Hyprperks" program be released for free for everyone.7
There's also a fast-growing plugin ecosystem: the Omarchy Plugin Marketplace already lists over 500 plugins, and the project just ran its first plugin competition with $2,500, $1,000, and $500 prizes.8
Why it matters
Whether the "Year of Linux on the Desktop" finally arrives is an open question. What's less debatable is that a founder with a real company behind him has shipped a complete, opinionated desktop and then put serious money behind the independent projects it depends on, including an exclusive sponsorship of one of the most important projects in the ecosystem. That combination is rare, and it's the reason Omarchy is worth watching.
